At new and full moon the Sun, Earth and Moon line up and their pull adds together: the water rises higher and falls lower. That is a spring tide. At first and last quarter the Sun and Moon pull at right angles and work against each other: the difference between high and low water stays small. That is a neap tide. The water reacts with a delay: on our coast the spring tide follows the Moon phase by two to three days on average, sometimes after one day, sometimes only after four or five (the Moon's distance plays a part). That is why the meter shows the actual tidal range per day for this station: our calculation engine gives the Moon phase, and the Rijkswaterstaat forecast points to the day.

Hoorn

Hoorn lay on the Zuiderzee for centuries and had tides of its own. Since the Zuiderzee was closed off by the Afsluitdijk (1932) the tide there has disappeared. Hoorn now lies on the Markermeer, which was separated from the IJsselmeer by the Houtribdijk in 1976: the water there only rises and falls with wind and water-level management, not with the Moon. That is why Hoorn is not in the list.

Not suitable for navigation; use official sources. This is a prediction from the Sun and Moon (astronomical tide). Wind, air pressure and river discharge can change the actual water level by decimeters to meters.

The eight moon phases

  • Waxing crescent
  • First quarter
  • Waxing gibbous
  • Full Moon
  • Waning gibbous
  • Last quarter
  • Waning crescent

A lunar cycle lasts 29.5 days on average. Waxing means the lit side is growing (lit on the right in the northern hemisphere); waning means it is shrinking (lit on the left).

How we calculate this

The positions of the Sun and Moon are calculated astronomically (JPL DE440). The phase follows from the angle between Moon and Sun; the percentage is the lit part of the Moon's disc. The interpretation of a moon phase in the Western astrological tradition is not a scientific prediction.
