Mars rules Aries and Venus rules Libra. The tradition says a planet is “in detriment” in the sign opposite its own, so Mars is in detriment in Libra and Venus in Aries. The oldest story that puts Ares and Aphrodite side by side is in Book 8 of the Odyssey, where the singer Demodocus tells how the two were caught together by Hephaestus. What the sky says
The signs are not the constellations. A sign is a 30° slice of the ecliptic counted from the March equinox (the tropical zodiac). The equinox slowly shifts against the stars, about one degree every 72 years (precession). Over two thousand years that adds up to more than 25°. Today the tropical signs and the sidereal zodiac used in Indian astrology differ by about 24°, depending on the reference point. So today the Sun at the March equinox stands in front of the stars of Pisces, and at the September equinox in front of Virgo.
The 180° above is measured between the beginnings of the two signs. Two planets, one in Aries and one in Libra, stand between 150° and 180° apart, measured the short way round; they are in exact opposition only at the same degree of their signs, for example 12° Aries and 12° Libra. Older astrology counts the signs as whole units and calls the pair opposite whatever the degrees; modern astrology also asks how close the angle is.
