Cancer and Leo compatibility
Cancer and Leo are neighbors in the zodiac, 30° apart, and they do not form an aspect: in the old doctrine the two signs do not see each other. One is water and cardinal, the other fire and fixed. Tradition reads that as two who have to learn each other’s language, the Moon’s sign beside the Sun’s. It describes a pattern in a tradition, not a verdict on two people.

The Moon beside the Sun
Cancer is the one sign ruled by the Moon and Leo the one ruled by the Sun, and they sit side by side. The other classical planets rule two signs each, and they are arranged in mirror image around this pair: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn follow one another outward on either side. The scheme goes back to antiquity and puts the two lights at the center of the summer signs.
Saturn is in detriment in both signs, since Saturn’s own signs lie on the far side of the zodiac. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, while Leo has no exaltation of any planet. The Sun spends about a month in each sign: it enters Cancer at the June solstice and Leo about a month later, at the height of summer in the northern hemisphere. Cancer opens the season and Leo sits in the middle of it, one cardinal and one fixed.
In love
In love, Cancer offers tenderness and shelter; Leo offers warmth, loyalty and a wish to be seen. Astrologers describe the pull as an old one, the Moon turned toward the Sun, but they also say that neighbors misread each other: Cancer can take Leo’s generosity for show, and Leo can take Cancer’s caution for coolness. One sign is cardinal and one fixed, so one starts things and the other keeps them going. The traditional advice is to say out loud what each means.
In friendship
As friends, the pair is usually described as devoted. Cancer remembers and keeps; Leo gives and gathers. Water and fire do not share an element, so what feels natural to one can surprise the other: Leo is comfortable at the center of a room, Cancer prefers a corner with a few people. Friction appears when Leo wants the evening to be an occasion and Cancer wants it to be quiet.
At work
At work, Cancer looks after the team and Leo leads it. The traditional picture is a capable pair when each is allowed a part: Cancer holds the group together, Leo stands in front of it. Credit and recognition are the usual sore point, and it helps to settle early who presents the work.
Strengths
- Mutual care: protection and generosity.
- One starts, one sustains: cardinal beside fixed.
- Shared loyalty to the people they choose.
Points of attention
- Misreading: neighbors do not see each other’s cues.
- Recognition: Leo wants to be seen, Cancer wants to be safe.
- Mood: Cancer’s moods can meet Leo’s pride.
What the sky says
The signs are not the constellations. The Sun enters the sign Leo about July 23, but it reaches the stars of the constellation Leo only around August 10; in between it stands in front of the stars of Cancer. The gap is the work of precession, about one degree every 72 years, which carries the signs away from the stars that gave them their names.
The 30° is the distance between the starts of the two signs, which lie next to each other. Planets in the two signs stand between 0° and 60° apart. Whole-sign astrology says neighboring signs have no aspect; the tradition that works with degrees still looks at how close two planets are, whichever signs they are in.
Frequently asked questions
Are Cancer and Leo a good match?
Astrology gives no yes or no. The traditional reading is neighbors of unlike elements who have to learn each other’s language, with the Moon’s sign beside the Sun’s. How two people get on depends on their whole charts, and on far more than their Sun signs.
Why do neighboring signs have no aspect?
In the old doctrine, signs see each other only when they are two, three, four or six signs apart, or in the same sign. Signs next to each other, and signs five apart, are said to turn their backs on each other. Astrologers call that aversion.
Does it matter that the Sun rules Leo and the Moon rules Cancer?
Astrologers say it ties the pair to the two lights, the Sun by day and the Moon by night, and to the oldest planetary scheme. It says nothing certain about two individual people.
