Zodiac compatibility: all 78 pairs

Astrologers have described how the signs relate to each other for two thousand years. This section takes the twelve signs pair by pair, 78 in all: each sign with every other sign, and each sign with itself. For every pair it shows the facts first (element, quality, ruler and the angle between the two signs) and then what the tradition makes of them.

There are no percentages here and no verdicts. How two people get on depends on far more than their Sun signs, and the Sun sign is one placement of many in a birth chart. We describe a tradition; we do not predict anything.

All 78 pairs

Read along the row of one sign and down the column of another. Each cell shows the angle between the two signs. A pair that is not published yet is greyed out; more pairs follow in stages.

Table of the 78 pairs of signs: each cell links to the page of that pair and shows the angle between the two signs.

The symbol shows the angle, not a rating: it says nothing about whether a pair works well.

The seven relations

  • Same sign 0°

Two people with the same sign share element, quality and ruler. Astrologers read this as recognition: you see yourself in the other, the good and the less good. 12 pairs

  • Neighbouring signs 30° · no aspect

Neighbouring signs are 30° apart. They differ in element and quality, and in the old doctrine of aspects they do not ‘see’ each other: there is no aspect. Astrologers say neighbours have to learn each other’s language. 12 pairs

  • Sextile 60°

Two signs apart, 60°. A sextile connects signs of friendly elements (fire and air, or earth and water). Tradition calls it an easy, cooperative aspect. 12 pairs

  • Square 90°

Three signs apart, 90°. The signs share a quality but differ in element. Astrologers read this as friction that produces movement. 12 pairs

  • Trine 120°

Four signs apart, 120°. The signs share an element. Tradition sees in it the most harmonious aspect: the same nature in different forms. 12 pairs

  • Quincunx 150° · no aspect

Five signs apart, 150°. As with neighbours, the signs have no aspect and differ in element and quality. Astrologers say each has to adjust to the other. 12 pairs

  • Opposition 180°

Six signs apart, 180°. The signs share a quality and have friendly elements. Astrologers read opposites as complements: each has what the other tends to lack, and the tension is the price. 6 pairs

Signs are not constellations

A sign is a 30° slice of the ecliptic, counted from the March equinox (the tropical zodiac). Because of precession the equinoxes drift slowly against the stars, about one degree every 72 years, so the signs no longer sit in front of the constellations that gave them their names. The angles on these pages are angles between signs.

The twelve signs · Astrology

This page describes a tradition. There is no scientific evidence that Sun signs predict how people get along, and nothing here is advice on a relationship.
